Gangster's Paradise

Jared Savage

In a few words

In Gangster's Paradise, investigative journalist Jared Savage exposes the underbelly of New Zealand's criminal world, with a gripping and unsettling narrative. The high-stakes world of drug deals, police raids, and inter-gang rivalries, create a sense of immediacy and tension, making this non-fiction read so much more than purely informative.

Great for

Anyone interested in true crime and/or social justice with a New Zealand focus will enjoy this thought-provoking read.

Why I love this book

Savage has an ability to humanise his subjects without glorifying them. He presents a balanced view, showcasing not only the ruthlessness and brutality of gang life but also the social and economic factors that drive individuals into this shadowy world. Through interviews with gang members, law enforcement, and victims, Savage paints a comprehensive picture of the pervasive influence of gangs on New Zealand society.

A particularly compelling anecdote involves Savage’s interview with a gang member named Kane. Kane, a high-ranking figure in a prominent gang, recounts his transformation from a troubled youth to a feared enforcer. He describes a harrowing incident where he narrowly escaped a police sting operation, which left him questioning his path and considering leaving the gang life behind. This raw and unfiltered account, and others like it, highlight the psychological toll of living a life of crime and the complex motivations behind it.

"Gangster's Paradise" is also a poignant critique of the systemic issues that perpetuate the cycle of crime and violence. Savage does not shy away from highlighting the failures of the criminal justice system, the challenges of rehabilitation, and the socio-economic disparities that fuel the rise of gangs. His call for comprehensive policy changes and better support systems for at-risk communities adds a layer of depth to the book, encouraging readers to think critically about potential solutions to these complex issues.

My one criticism would be

While I appreciated the level of detail, at times it made for dense reading, so make sure you give this book the full attention it deserves.
