Dial M for Murdoch

Watson, Tom & Hickman, Martin

  8 Reviews

For years Rupert Murdoch's newspapers had been hacking, spying, blagging, bribing and destroying the evidence. They thought they were untouchable. They were wrong. This is the book that has exposed the shadow state at the heart of Britain. Now fully updated with the very latest News Corp scandal, it tells the story of how a criminal conspiracy involving politicians, the police and the press was revealed; the smears and threats they used to cover it up; the brave whistleblowers who cracked open the case and what it now means for all of us. Interesting topical subject, very hard book to read, however lively discussion. Nelson 014

Who can you trust? "Absolutely compulsive reading" vs "I couldn't bear to read it" Made for great discussion. Christchurch 009

Very interesting book. A few didn't enjoy it but most of us found it extremely worthwhile to read and had us looking for more up to date info from the internet and also film re early days of Murdoch. Morrinsville 002

All in all it's a fascinating book and obviously it's not over yet - our members will follow with great interest the next phase of the Leveson enquiry. Matamata 003

A difficult book to read - contents, number of people etc but worthwhile. Disturbing how politicians and police are so easily corrupted for personal gain. The theme through the book was fear - politiicans needed Murdoch's endorsement and all were afraid of Murdoch, Rebekah Wade etc. The deception and lies were huge. Law breaking on an industrial scale. Very well researched and written. If UK establishment is corruptible, who can we trust? Christchurch 058

Some of us found the book difficult with so many names and initials used. We had a great discussion on the ethics of newspapers.

Less than half our group managed to finish it - but great discussion nevertheless as we could all remember the outcry at the time. Moral compass/News/Advertising/Power/Truth/Politics etc etc. Plus, has anything changed

Many of our group did not enjoy this book - found it very difficult to read, too detailed. But it did create excellent discussion about the role of the media, privacy and freedom of the press.

Most people liked this although it was a sturdy read and written from a reporter's perspective and not a storyteller's viewpoint. It was good to have an intro to the main characters to help follow the story, which was very cut and dried. It was an eyeopener and, we understand, an ongoing investigation into a very corrupt society. Must read.

Those who finished the book enjoyed it and found it to be very informative. Some people were put off it early because they found it too difficult to keep track of all the characters. It was horrifying how one man was able to control institutions that should be incorruptible.

A hard book to read but topical for today and the world. Whistleblowers deserve a medal.

Those who have lived in the UK were able to follow the detail well enough to finish the book and rated it well. Those who passed on the book appreciated the notes and agreed it was courageous of the authors to risk legal attack.
