Nearly everyone loved this classic. Hard to believe it was written almost 100 years ago. Great writing.

A grim but powerful story. It must have been difficult to translate from German but was very well done. There were just enough lighter moments to prevent the story from becoming too harrowing. The story was lightened by descriptions of "ordinary", sometimes amusing, events in the life of the young 20 year-old soldier who realises that he has seen nothing of life except war.

The group found this harrowing, and some didn't finish it. Nevertheless we all found it very worthwhile in its descriptions of what the war was like for the soldiers, and a major contribution to anti-war literature. We also thought it was very well-written.

Great discussion. The book is definitely a classic, a masterpiece of wonderful language. It gave us so much insight into the minds of the soldiers, and it could have been any soldier, not just German. Not a book to enjoy but we were all pleased to have read it.

All thought it was SO well written. Such a sad story, with graphic detail, but so understandable that young boys felt their lives had been taken away from them.

We all agreed that this book has lost none of its relevance so many years later.

Deserves to be a classic. Brilliant writing. Some found it overwhelming and cried while reading, however finished the book due to the quality of the writing. We were divided in opinion as to the fate of the main character. Having held our meeting the day after Anzac day, it was a very poignant reminder about war and all its consequences.

This book was surprisingly engaging for several in the group who wouldn't normally read a 'western'. Quite different, but we were glad we read it.

A classic read, which should be essential reading for 16/17 year olds. A riveting read for all in this group. Highly recommended.

Most of the group really enjoyed this as it gives the view from the 'other' side of the war. Some found it harrowing, some didn't finish it.
