Engleby

Faulks, Sebastian

  12 Reviews

Meet Mike Engleby, a second-year student at university. Despite the fact that Mike is obviously intelligent and involved in many clubs, it is clear that something about Mike is not quite right. When he becomes fixated on a classmate named Jennifer Arkland and she goes missing, we are left with the looming question: Is Mike Engleby involved?

Stimulated an excellent discussion, as there were varied viewpoints on the book. Some absolutely loved it. All thought the writing was excellent, highly skilled. Milton 002

An extraordinarily well written and clever book. Not a pleasant story but so well delivered. The reader is drawn along regardless.... Great discussion. Wellington 041

A good discussion was held.... Some beautifully written passages and keen observations on the philisophy of life. Some found it difficult to read about a character from the first person, who was universally disliked. Christchurch 229

Widely varying reactions. Most agreed that the book was cleverly written, even if they did not like the story.... Wellington 23

A well written book. which holds the reader with a twist of darkness. An itriguing exploration into the mind. Te Awamutu 3

A divisive read - split the group in half over its content, style and themes.

Those who liked a psychological thriller loved this book. Others found it more like 'We Need To Talk About Kevin'. A well-written book. Very different to other books by this author.

Most found the book hard work but fascinating - and pressed on to the end to discover how the author finished. They thought if it was the first book they'd read by Faulks they wouldn't read another, but those who had read others thought this one was a completely different type of story!

Another remarkable example of this author's skill as a writer. Subject matter very sobering, and one reader found it too depressing to finish reading it. Some members felt sorry for the protagonist because of his overall difficulties to fit in the world.

Very popular book with the whole group. While some found it a challenging and somewhat dark read, everyone was very engaged by the storyline, and it prompted a lot of interesting discussion.

All appreciated the book - some loved it, some more ambivalent and found it disturbing. All agreed, however, that it was a worthwhile read, very well-written, and produced a great deal of stimulating discussion, especially around the topic of mental illness.

This was considered to be a compelling, appalling, brilliantly constructed account of a psychopathic and narcissistic personality.

Overall 'Engleby' was well received by most group members. Well-written, however quite a different type of book to the author's other books. A couple of the group found it hard going and dark. But others found it a real page turner.
