Girls in the Picture, The

Benjamin, Melanie

First it was the 'flickers' and then the 'talkies'. Screenwriter Frances Marion and America's Sweetheart, actress Mary Pickford, are there to not only see it all, but play their part in making it happen. Being Hollywood, there's no escaping the drama, the passion, a healthy dose of ambition, sacrifice and of course power and the imbalance of power.

Spanning from the early 1900s to the 1970s, this is an enthralling novel based on real life events, recalling the powerful professional collaboration and competitive friendship of two memorable trailblazers of the fledgling movie industry.

Enjoyable meeting, but underwhelming read for most.

Most of the group enjoyed the book, and learnt some things about the early days of the film industry and its stars. We found it a tricky read to get into, and to enjoy this unusual book - took about halfway then the writing and story clicked! A challenge.

Mixed reviews about the book. Some didn't like the writing style, but most thought of it as a great story about strong women leading the film industry!
