Journal of Dora Damage, The
Starling, BelindaIn Victorian London, when Dora Damage is forced to take over her sick husband's bookbinding business, she finds herself binding expensive volumes of pornography commissioned by aristocratic roues. Her charm and spirit carry her through as she contends with violent debt collectors, an epileptic daughter, evil doctors, a rheumatic husband, errant workmen, nosy neighbours, and a constant stream of wealthy dilettantes. Gradually Dora is pulled into in an illegal trade of sex, money, and deceit.

All appreciated the story of a strong woman, coping with [a] huge range of 'difficulties'. Thoroughly enjoyed details of book binding. Oamaru 001 Some found this book a bit grim with its description of the tough times. Some thought nothing has changed ..... A great story about a lady who had courage and was able to think outside the square. Nelson 031 It goes deep into Victorian social history..... Best of all, the detailed description of the book binding trade - the quality papers, fine leathers. Auckland 020 We thought most of the first two thirds was well written, but the last part rather unbelievable...... Rotorua 006

Mixed feelings in the group on this one. But we all felt it was a great story about how Dora coped and took us into the like of Victorian society.
