Wood, PatriciaPerry L. Crandall ('L' for Lucky) isn't retarded, and he'll tell you so. His beloved Gram tells him being slow isn't a bad thing; he'll get where he needs to go in his own time. When his life in a small coastal town is radically changed by two events: the death of his grandmother and his winning $12 million, it's Perry's relatives - who'd only just cheated him out of the inheritance he was due on his grandmother's death - who are holding out their hands for the money.

As a group we universally loved this book. .... It made you think about your own life and what is really important in it.... A wonderful story. Auckland 248 In a word - delightful! Christchurch 011 We thought this was the best book so far. Everyone enjoyed it. We thought the book was gentle and kind..... Christchurch 318 Mixed reactions. Prompted discussion on happiness. Napier 007Everyone really enjoyed the book, characters. A few even cried whilst reading! Had a good discussion on lots of different aspects of the book and characters.Auckland 157 The group all loved this book. Real characters, funny, light...yet also generated great discussion. Also, who is "family"? They are not always biological. For Perry, his true family was Keith, Cherry and Gary (after his Gram died). We also talked about what we would do if WE won Lotto. Matamata 006 Mixed to poor reviews. Some thought it a simple storyline which didn't progress, and with ugly characters. Others felt it was an enjoyable and uplifting story, with a slight edge of suspense. We enjoyed Gram's take on the world. Auckland 285 It was charming - a little treasure. A book with a great moral - good triumphing over evil. A page turner. Wellington 036 Everyone in the group loved this book and the discussion went well. What could have been mawkish, or somewhat unbelievable is handled brilliantly by the writer, and the result is a highly readable and enjoyable perspective on a unique character's life. Wellington 116 Some found it hard to get "into" the book, and gave up after a few chapters. However the rest of us enjoyed it. We found the protagonist's family too thoroughly wicked to be believable, but otherwise well written. We enjoyed seeing the world through Perry's eyes. Huntly 001

Everyone found the book easy to read (despite the small print size!), and most enjoyed it. Interesting characters and first-person narration. We enjoyed the development of the main character, and how this was reflected in the language. Not our favourite this year, but still enjoyable.

We all enjoyed this book. It was like a little fable, but the themes were pure and there were some delightful lines which made us laugh and think. Certainly plenty of threads to hold an interesting discussion. Would recommend.
