Maya Aziz can appreciate that her parents will want to control her life for as long as possible, but she is having none of it. She has her sights set high - studying film-making in New York - and nothing is going to stop her. Even a terrorist attack that adds yet another layer of scrutiny for them as Muslims and people of colour, will not deter her.

With its thought-provoking depiction of Islamophobia in contemporary America and its exploration of the challenges for children of migrants, this is an engaging coming-of-age story that will appeal to readers of all ages. [Larger font]

This was read and enjoyed by all but one of our group. We agreed that the ideal demographic was younger than us, but nevertheless it stimulated an interesting discussion about 'outsiders' (real or perceived), immigration, refugees and acculturation.

Many of us thought this was a little unrealistic, and many of us thought it was going to be an autobiography and were disappointed that it was more like a teen romance. Some good points about discrimination were raised however. We actually enjoyed the intercalary part of the story the most, and would have liked more detail there.
