The discussion went very well. Everyone liked the book - some were reading it for the first time but many were re-reading it. It was a long book and not everyone could finish... Wellington 001 Very heavy going! We all felt we needed 2 months to do it justice. Most didn't finish it, but those who did enjoyed the prose and historical social aspects. Masterton 008 Most were very enthusiastic about Middlemarch. We loved the style, the detail in her writing and her female character development. Dunedin 005 Enjoyed by all (who finished it). We were impressed with the subtle humour, excellent characterisation, readable prose and (mostly) illuminating social commentary. Oxford 002 A wonderful book! The best thing we've read, maybe ever. Taihape 004 We found this to be very wise, very relevant and very well crafted. We would recommend persevering, as the second half is easier to read than the first, and it's well worth the effort.
