Duncker, Patricia

  11 Reviews

Miss Webster and Cherif tells the story of Elizabeth Webster, a single woman pushing 70 years. Forced out of her teaching job, she unleashes her sharp tongue on everyone in the English village of Blessington. To recover from a sudden illness, she travels to North Africa where she has a brush with terrorism. Three weeks after Miss Webster has returned home, her doorbell rings, and she finds on her doorstep a beautiful young Arab man carrying a large suitcase. [Larger font]

Everyone got caught up in the intrigue. Thought it was cleverly written - kept us all guessing. New Plymouth 012

Patricia Duncker has an amazing sense of wit and insight into ageing and relationships - some of the writing conjures up the most beautiful images. Katikati 002

Fun to discuss. Such a poignant protagonist - we admired, not necessarily liked. Christchurch 203

Easy read, character driven and captured English quirkiness well. Auckland 063

Controversial.. Most felt there were too many strange threads that didnt connect through an unbelievable plot. Quite a lively discussion.

Our group all enjoyed the book, an easy read with lots of intrigue and plenty left to the imagination. We loved the humour and characters, so vividly portrayed. Good discussion generated although many in the group felt some of the questions were almost insensitive in our Kiwi setting.

An enjoyable read. The group felt there were some unnecessary coincidences used to link the phases of the tale, but these were minor irritants! Not as much discussion as usual.

A splendid cantankerous old lady. We felt there were a few unexplained devices but it was generally well enjoyed.

It took a while to get into the story, but the lovely use of language helped.

We mostly enjoyed the book, but had a few mixed feelings about the ending. It left a few things unexplained and seemed to end suddenly. An easy read with interesting characters.

Another enjoyable read - although the realists amongst us were somewhat scathing of the story-line. Some lovely phrases and descriptions and lyrical patches. Quite fun - we'll look out for more of her work.
