The hero lives through four centuries and many disguises. The story "stands history on its head". Readers would benefit from reading Portrait of a Marriage by Nigel Nicolson for some background on the Bloomsbury group of which Woolf was a member. [Small font]

Comments from GroupsThis was a challenging read, but 8/10 thought it was a wonderful book . Auckland 172 This was a hard one to start with, but most persevered and found it very rewarding. It provoked a very lively discussion on all sorts of topics. Auckland 122 We had a great discussion about this book - several of our members did not like it but most were carried away by the writing. If one had the time, we agreed, every chapter deserved at least an hour to get the most out of it. A great read, but it helps to have some background knowledge. Wellington 074 A mixed reaction. Some couldn't get into it at all; others had read it before for English Literature. Not an easy read, but beautiful prose. Auckland 281 The video is a must for this book, a visual delight...Wellington 027
