Road Home, The

Tremain, Rose

  11 Reviews

Lev is on his way to Britain to seek work, so that he can send money back to Eastern Europe to support his mother and small daughter. He struggles with the mysterious rituals of "Englishness", and the fashions and fads of the London scene. We see the road Lev travels through Lev's eyes, and we share his dilemmas: the intimacy of his friendships, old and new; his joys and sufferings; his aspirations, and his hopes of finding his way home, wherever home may be.

Heart-warming story of human relationships...all about the journey and not the destination. Papamoa 001

We loved this book and all wanted to re-read later to get more out of it. Wanaka 008.

Provoked a lot of discussion, especially remembering our first weeks in London far from home. Ending felt a bit too perfect. A light enjoyable read. Tauranga 019

We more or less agreed on this novel even though many of us prefer non-fiction. There were one or two bits that we thought were unnecessary and others that were slightly far-fetched. But there were happy endings for most of the characters and that is always satisfying.

Most of the group struggled with the small print but enjoyed the story. Some of the characters were loved from the start, and Rudi was a light relief to the serious nature of the story.

Most of the group enjoyed the book - one or two commented on the very small print. Discussion developed around the area of eastern Europe that Lev was supposed to have left and the circumstances of re settling in the UK. The author portrayed the different characters extremely well, and there was a definite contrast between Lev leaving to find new horizons with better prospects, and Ina who did not want to go. Highly recommended.

Hard to get into. A good record of a journey in a new culture and the challenges faced. It prompted one of the group to read more by this author.

We were divided as to the enjoyment of the storyline. Some of our readers found the pace slow and unable to become engaged with the storyline. Others found it very engaging with the contrasting characters. We were all able to relate to many of the messages: hard work/success, kindness, caring and reward. The book was well-written.

A good read. A realistic view of the immigrant experience, and the characters were well portrayed. The end was a little abrupt and felt a little unfinished. Enjoyed by all. We will all read more by this author.

Very interesting, not a book to skim through. Provoked a good discussion about the nature of 'home ' and immigration. It has inspired several of our members to look for other books by Rose Tremain.
