Sixty Seconds

Blackadder, Jesse

  14 Reviews

Sixty seconds, that's all it takes to shatter the Brennan family. Finn and Bridget and their sons Jarrah and Toby are still settling in after their move from Hobart to balmy Murwillumbah when tragedy strikes. In the aftermath, the recriminations and the police and media attention seem unbearable ... but there is hope and there will be forgiveness.

Inspired by the author's own family experience, this is a compelling and sensitively written story of a family confronting their worst nightmare, and finding a way forward. [Larger font]

Mixed responses to this well-written book - made us consider how we'd respond in a traumatic situation. Some really disliked it.

A very readable but sad story. Interesting to have different voices of the family members narrating. How sixty seconds can change lives is thought-provoking.

Well-written - an interesting portrayal of how we all cope with loss.

A gruelling read as several in our group had experienced tragedy, which also made the questions a difficult discussion. All agreed that the author managed it well especially the relationship issues which are very real in tragedies.

A well-written book about an uncomfortable subject. Two did not read it. The rest were surprised that they enjoyed the book. We had a good discussion but found the questions annoying.

We thought the author handled the sensitive subject matter very well. It shows how grief can affect people in different ways. It maintained interest by never concluding who was really to blame. In fact it eventually became irrelevant, and this fact probably kept the family together - to grieve without blame.

Most of us enjoyed Sixty Seconds. Some felt the way it was plotted was rather clumsy. However, it sparked an interesting discussion on grief, and one family's way of coping with the child's death, and ways folk cope with grief generally.

Predictable. We enjoyed Jarrah's point of view the most.

Most members found the book hard to read, but liked the way each character was given a voice to express their deep grief.

Mixed reviews from our group, with some varied interpretations of the authors intentions. Excellent portrayal of a family's grief, but the extra theme about Jarrah's sexuality seemed out of place.
