Kindness of Your Nature, The

Olsson, Linda

  10 Reviews

Seeking refuge from her early life in Europe, Marion Flint leads a reclusive existence on a North Island west coast beach. But it is not until she befriends Ika, a vulnerable and abused child, that she begins to confront her own demons. The friendship that develops allows both Marion and Ika the possibility of learning to trust others again.

With its careful handling of complex relationships, this story is a sensitive yet unflinching examination of family dysfunction and abuse. [Larger font]

Intriguing story - good descriptions re loneliness and scenes. Beautifully written. Reminded some of 'The Bone People'. Auckland 261

All oru readers enjoyed this book, many reading it at one sitting and others deciding to read it again. The descriptions and ambience of the west coast were beautifully written. Hamilton 026

Everyone loved this. Evocative writing - setting scene, descriptions and development of characters. We all felt the flashbacks were brilliantly placed and filled in gaps and aided in creating empathy and understanding for Marianne/Marion. The characters of Ika and George were well done.

Lots of discussion. Though centred on a rugby player, the women in the group found plenty to talk about in this book about depression, mental states and living.

Some didn't find it easy at the start, but those who persisted enjoyed the book, although found it improbable. The writing appealed to many of us; we were familiar with the area and her descriptions resonated. She wove things together in a very creative way.
