Well written and easy to read - we didn't want the book to end. It gave insight to life in a logging community at the turn of the century. It could easily have been 2 books. Gore 006

After adjusting to the Edwardian style of writing, our members found enjoyment in reading this book. Jane Mander was viewed as having opinions and philosophies ahead of most women of her era. Queenstown 003

Most of our group read this and thoroughly enjoyed it. It certainly generated a lot of discussion and reflection, both of the era and how it related to contemporary times. In many ways, the author (we felt) was ahead of her time in terms of her concepts, her take on 'love' and life. Dunedin 067
