Change For Good, A

Thorp, John

  11 Reviews

Research scientist John Thorp began life with the outward appearance of a female but with the mind and spirit of a male. Although academically and professionally successful, the young Josephine (Jo) faced derision and isolation from society. When the only escape from her lonely non-life seemed to be suicide, she was saved by the love and support of partner, Joan, who inspired Jo to endure the operations and treatments to turn her into John. All enjoyed the book. Simple to read. Amazing insight into a frought life. Christchurch 143

Alot of enthusiasm for this book - if someone with so many potential problems could make a fulfilling life for themselves then we have nothing to complain about. Nelson 002

We felt the author wrote the book as a plea for understanding. .... His dreadful experiences going through his change moved us and we appreciated the problems he still faced afterwards....A very interesting read - simple prose - and made us aware that trans-sexuals face even more problems than those who are gay....Auckland 088

Interesting discussion ensued about trans gender issues. Book seen as educational rather than a satisfying, gripping well written read.

The group felt the author was brave to write this book. There was much sympathy for what he had to endure. The writing was simple but readable, and opened up much discussion.

Group members found this book very easy to read, and the author very honest and straight talking on his whole experience.

Plenty of discussion! Some were disappointed with the writing style although we felt anything more sensational would have spoilt the sincerity of the writer in trying to explain the situation. Difficult for us to imagine all the situations he must have had to endure.

Most felt that the subject matter was interesting but the writing itself was rather dull. The author was not a likeable character; we found him rather precious, very self-centred, and selfish!! However, the issues around gender were fascinating.

Generally we all found this book interesting and informative on transsexuality. Also our group had a good discussion re attitudes on life in the 1950s and now.

An interesting read that produced good discussion. We enjoyed the messages the author was conveying regarding understanding and acceptance, and it was an insight into one man's unusual journey through life. Would recommend to others as it was non confrontational but also challenged our conventional understanding of the genders.

The group didn't enjoy this book. They felt that the subject matter could have provided for a great read but the style of writing and lack of any emotion in the book left us feeling very short-changed.
