Escape from Bosnia: Aza's Story

McCauley, Sue

  7 Reviews

The story of Brent King, NZ pilot sent as UN observer to Bosnia in 1993, and Aza Mehmedovic who King helps to escape from Zepa, a Muslim enclave under siege from the Serbs. This heart-rending telling of the struggle, starvation, and constant attacks on the enclave, as well as people's bravery and resourcefulness in their refusal to be defeated, fills the reader with admiration. We all found Aza's story interesting - distressing and very educational. We liked that there were not many questions - although they seemed simple - they provoked discussions. Lower 008

Reactions were mixed. Interesting speculations on style of Sue McCauley and whether it influenced the way the story was told or whether true characters of Brent and Aza came through. The nature of the account meant that one could not "enjoy" the book, but could find it thought-provoking. ChCh 068

The members present all enjoyed the book. It gave a good insight into life during that restless and unruly time and the way people had to cope with circumstances was interesting. Hokitika 001

A good discussion followed the reading of Aza's Story. It was generally felt it gave a first hand insight into this Bosnian war from 2 people very much there. All agreed it was very well compiled and constructed by the author and the love story sympathetically portrayed. A good read! Culverden

Very mixed reaction. Some 50 % thought it a poorly written book which failed to provide enough depth. Others thoroughly enjoyed it. Masterton 004

We all thought this was great - well written and unbelievable, and to think it happened so recently, quite educational. We would all love to know where Aza is now, and if they are still in New Zealand.

We all enjoyed it, and most of us would recommend it to other groups. It is a very 'current' book, but doesn't deal graphically with the horrors of war, dealing more with the effects it has on everyday life of those caught up in conflicts.

This is the first book all our group read and finished, and were moved by. It was not necessarily well-written, but we could all relate to it, given what is now going on in Syria.

There was more interest in the earlier parts of the book with the information on the war, than in the middle section and the details of the 'escape'.
