Very interesting subject matter which afforded much lively discussion. In Danny, Pat Barker created a complex character that left us wondering how the rest of his life would develop. One of the few books that everyone in the group enjoyed. A compelling story, was the comment most often made. Barker is a superb writer, and as one member pointed out, unlike many writers, every word she uses is essential. One member felt the relationship between the psychologist and young man bordered on unprofessional but forgave the writer because the story was so enjoyable. It also generated a good discussion on children who commit crimes.

A great book which prompted good discussion of personality, motivation and manipulation, good vs. evil, are we made or born, and how much of our behaviour can be changed.

The group really liked the questions and good discussion flowed. Generally, there was a feeling that the ending was unsatisfactory. The story unfolded well and tension built effectively, but was then lost in ordinariness at the end.

Although our reactions to the book were initially quite mixed, we had a very rich discussion which proved to us the value of reading the same book and listening to each other's reactions and thoughts. Those who connected with it immediately were the ones involved in the caring professions. But the issues of boundaries at all levels were explored widely. It was very thought provoking, and the questions were also very helpful.

An easy read, but we were hoping for more depth in both the storyline and characters. Most of us felt let down with the story as a whole - it had potential but didn't reach it.
