Donoghue, EmmaMa and Jack's world is limited physically to a space 11 foot square, but unlimited by imagination that transforms each and every facet of their existence. It was difficult to get into the read. Some of us didn't read it, while others persevered and found it rewarding.

We had a great discussion, and general consensus is that it was an excellent book that was well written and very clever. The author's ability to write from the perspective of a 5 year old so accurately was amazing.

Really different and almost refreshing read. Wouldn't have wanted to start reading it if someone hadn't told us there was a happy ending.

We thought this was a great read- creative and inventive. Some were disappointed by the second half where the mother and child adjust to the real world. Obviously a topical book given recent events in the USA, but it did make us wonder, with fear, how common this situation could be. Do we really know our neighbours, and how can such situations be concealed in a busy neighbourhood

It was inventive to write from the point of view of a 5 year old about such a disturbing, horrid situation. Everyone ended up liking the book overall, though some had a hard time engaging at first, and a person or two wanted the ending to include more of the next years of Jack's life, and how he adjusted. The discussion was lively because it was such an intriguing subject.

Without exception all thought this was a great book. None of us looked forward to the subject matter, but because of Donoghue's writing skills it was not as bleak and depressing as it could have been. Jack's voice was particularly strong while in 'Room', but faded a little in 'Outside'. The author was quite spare and subtle in her writing.

This book was well received by our group. Our discussion was robust and had highs and lows. Topics ranged from the dark and disturbing realities of confinement stories, to the wonderful way in which 'Ma' made the best of her situation to protect her son. Although a rather slow start, by the time we reached the climax of the story, we couldn't put it down.

Whilst a sensitive topic, it was very cleverly written and captivated those that chose to read it. It stimulated extensive discussion, and we found it thought provoking yet disturbing.
