Born on a Blue Day
Tammet, DanielDaniel Tammet has Savant Syndrome, a rare form of Asperger's Syndrome. He is able to do extraordinary calculations, and has mastered more than seven languages. He also experiences narrow fixations, and has an obsessive need for order. Yet, he overcomes his disabilities to live independently and form lasting relationships. The book explores what it's like to be special and, in so doing, gives us an insight into what makes us all human — our mind. [Larger font]

...almost all skipped over the detailed mathematical sections! Excellent for creating wider discussion on the topic and related themes than for its intrinsic literary merit. Martinborough 003An interesting read if you bypass thefigures. But, so interesting. Daniel's parents must be very patient! Palmerston Nth 013Mixed reactions. discussed style of writing - some thought it simple but others agreed if it was involved it would not seem genuine. Auckland 261Difficult to begin with but progressed into an extremely interesting account written by a very courageous young man. Well worth the read. Otorohanga 003 Daniel Tammet has made himself an able spokesman and 'ambassador', paving the way for others with these syndromes to be better understood and respected in their own lives and communities. Most of us enjoyed this. Quite an extraordinary story. Easy to read. Solid 4/5. Some found it a bit close to home, having had family members affected by autism/Aspergers or similar.

An easy book to read, with a very interesting insight into the workings of a brain wired so differently to most of us.

This book scored 9-10. Great insight into how differently Daniel saw the world with his descriptions of how he saw numbers - amazing. We were amazed at Daniels's parents - unconditional love and support despite the many trials of a large family.

We wish we'd learned more about his relationship with Neil. Well-written; it sparked a lot of discussion about special needs children.

Probably one of the more challenging reads to stay engaged with. Some parts interesting, others beyond understanding. Much like Asperger's - so insightful in some respects.

The book created lots of discussion - nearly all members have some experience of people with Asperger's. Should be included in training material for all teachers and social service workers. A book we will not stop thinking about!

Everyone enjoyed the book and the fascinating insights into the mind of someone with Asperger's Syndrome. Daniel has amazing capabilities most of us can't begin to understand.

Most of us enjoyed it although we many of us skipped numbers sections. About a savant who has Aspergers and sees numbers as colours, shapes and feelings. Interesting discussion on whether we thought it was based on the truth or pure fiction.
