Moment of Lift, The

Gates, Melinda

  23 Reviews

No, this is not an instruction manual for pilots learning to fly, but certainly is an introduction on how to go about changing the world by empowering women. Drawing on her experience over the last twenty years, and as co-chair of the world's largest philanthropic organisation, Melinda Gates writes compellingly about the world's most urgent humanitarian issues. From family planning and child marriage through to educating girls and women in the workplace, a combination of evidence and anecdote offers convincing first steps and solutions.

Thoughtful and down-to-earth, this is an encouraging manifesto for changing the world as well as the record of a personal journey undertaken by a committed global advocate.

This book was universally appreciated. Lots to learn about women across the world. Access to health and contraception is something we take for granted. Melinda Gates is an incredible advocate. Thank you.

Great discussion on world issues, gender issues, religion, wealth, and listening - as well as gossip about Melinda and Bill.

Subject matter amazing but the writing style detracted from the overall rating. Robust discussion.

Overall our members were impressed with how the Foundation went about its work and the importance of 'uplifting' women to 'uplift' a community as a whole.

An amazing book which offers many insights into perspectives on not only "our" world, but diverse groups. Great to see a N.Z mention about Marilyn Waring's contribution! A lot of discussion and a book to share with others.

The group felt it was a book that everyone should read, especially as the author worked with girls and women who live in 'the margins of society'.

Each member brought out important parts of the book which emphasised the principles governing how society can make changes for improvement in the culture of a nation's society, particularly for those living in the margins. When women's voices are included on an equal footing with men, and their visions see opportunities unseen by men, better business decisions can be made - resulting in better economic and scientific progress...In the epilogue she says that the supreme goal for humanity is not just equality, but connection - which ends the urge to push out the other...

Enjoyed by most. Lifting women up to be equal in the poorer countries seemed to be the theme.

We found her achievements considerable as well as making us more aware of global issues that are too easily ignored.

This was interesting more than inspirational. We respect Melinda Gates' commitment to improving poverty in the world. As with all autobiographies it is biased, but she does appear honest.

All found this book very interesting, and an insight into what the Gates Foundation has achieved. Lots of inspiring passages in this book, and provoked a very interesting discussion on women's rights.

A very interesting read. Most thought it could be a bit shorter, as it seemed to be repetitive in places. Melinda did not brag, acknowledging her own flaws.

Our group very much enjoyed this book. We hope it raises global awareness in breaking down barriers for gender equality, and to empower and inspire women.
