Open: An Autobiography

Agassi, Andre

  11 Reviews

It is shocking to discover that tennis great Andre Agassi hated tennis. With a refreshing degree of candour, this autobiography reveals the conflicted man behind the outstanding tennis career; the pitfalls on the path to maturity, the dysfunction and the success, and everything between. With its open and honest disclosures, this is a fascinating story that will appeal to both tennis fans and those who have never graced a court. [Small font]

We all loved the first half of the book but not all enjoyed it to the end because of the repetitive detail of matches. For two readers, it was their first autobiography and they were suitably impressed. For many, they were inspired to research more into various aspects of Agassi's life. The book read very well, an amazing collection of thoughts and experiences that differ greatly to our own lives, a real eye-opener into the demanding world of sport.

Enjoyed this book to see the human side of celebs. Andre is a frustrating, precious but fragile character, and this autobiography gives a candid look into his world. A good refreshing read.

We all really enjoyed reading about Agassi and the agonies he went through to reach his potential. Mixed feelings about the revelation of his drug use - from disappointment to compassion. The discussion went well, everyone participated even those who had known nothing about tennis. A few said they would not have selected the book from the library/store, and were surprised they enjoyed it.

Interesting upbringing!! Good discussion re natural ability vs parental pressures. We found the middle section long - could have been edited. Insightful re life of a professional sportsperson.

Less repetitive detail about the games would have been good, but overall an enjoyable book.

Some didn't enjoy this as much as others -generally those not interested in tennis. However an easy read. An honest 'open' biography.
